The Mourne Triathlon has been a spectacle in the Triathlon Ireland race calendar for 25 years and 2010 showed why. The race committee from Olympian Triathlon Club, in particular Jan van Hooijdonk and Carl King, along with the Pioneer Group, brought a new burst of life into the already popular course.

Over 200 athletes competed in the race, starting with a tremendous open-water swim which Colleen Mallon – following her impressive time at the previous Series race Top of the Mourne – stormed through in a time of 16:48 closely trailed by Hi Elbow Tri Club’s Brian Campbell who emerged after 16:52.

Brian finished both the cycle and run in the fastest times of 1:10:27 and 31:59 respectively to claim the gold in 2:00:50 – with an 8 minute lead on 2nd place finisher Peter Savage from Newry Tri Club.

Setanta Triathlon Club’s Mary Laverty, back in the Decathlon NI Triathlon Series after her victory at Crooked Lake, won the female open with a time of 2:20:34, and Team David Hewitt won the relay event with a combined time of 2:15:45.

Congratulations to all the competitors and thank you to the race committee from Olympian Triathlon Club and the Pioneer Group on a great event for Mourne’s 25th Anniversary!
