The inaugural Top of the Mourne Triathlon in Rostrevor, Co. Down on Sunday 25th July welcomed over 100 competitors to one of the toughest Olympic distance races in the country. This course is not to be underestimated!
Race Director Peter Quinn along with members of Newry Triathlon Club put competitors to the test starting with the 1500m swim in Carlingford Lough which Colleen Mallon stormed through in 19:18. (despite having won the 3.5km open-water Rostrevor to Warrenpoint swim the previous day!). The cycle – notoriously tough, ruthlessly hilly and with ground that was slightly wet on the day to make it just that little bit harder – was no mean feat. Ross Collins from Newry Tri Club completed the bike in 1:15:10 giving him a clear 4-minute lead followed by an impressive sub-40 minute 10km run through Kilbroney Park Forest to win the event in an overall time of 2:19:47.
Olympian Triathlon Club’s Trudy Brown – winner of the previous Decathlon NI Triathlon Series, the Waterways Ireland Fermanagh Lakeland Triathlon – also hammered her way through this course in a time of 2:36:15.

Congratulations to Peter Quinn and his team on a great first year of Top of the Mourne!
